I would always just get seperate checks. Why would you not? Pay for what you eat and they pay for what they eat. Splitting the bill as a whole when everyone orders different things at diefferent costs just doesn't make sense.
References :
Those "check splitters" know perfectly well what they're doing. They think it makes them look like big spenders who are willing to pay a little more for the convenience of simplifying matters. But -- surprise, surprise -- guess who had the shrimp appetizer, the tenderloin steak dinner, the expensive wine that they drank up all by themselves, and the "Death by Chocolate" dessert?

Tell the server when he or she first approaches your table that you NEED a separate check for you and the person you're with (indicate who that is). You could even embellish your request and make it seem more plausible, by saying you'll want a receipt -- as if you were putting your particular meals on an expense account.

If the server gives you a hard time, you can either ask for the manager and straighten things out, or get up and walk. Somebody has got to give those freeloading acquaintances of yours a strong message!
References :
Definitely separated checks. Say you get a salad and the person next to you gets a prime rib. How is it fair if you have to pay for their dinner?
References :
Upon ordering- tell the server (not servant) "Separate checks please" and she will take care of it for you.

Why 2 thumbs down for Darrel?
References :
When you book the table or when you are first approached by the waiter, ensure that you stipulate 'separate cheques' BEFORE you order. That way everything is kept 'clean'

If the restaurant argues, leave there and eat somewhere else - remember You are the Customer - they are the Servants. You can insist.

I know the situation very well. Although you may feel nervous about it, once you set the ground rules, everyone will understand. If the greedy ones want an extra portion it will then br to their account.
The same applies to drinks, never get into a 'kitty'.
References :
when a single check comes, grab it, pay your share and what you would give the server. Put the money on top of the check and drop it in the middle of the table and finish your conversation.
if all of you grew up together and one of you got a turn of fortune and is a millionaire then you should carry your roadies and let it go.
References :
It depends on the situation. If there's a party of eight, and two people order "extras", like cocktails and dessert, and the others don't, then those two people should be responsible. I would insist on separate checks.

If everyone has a meal with no extras, then the tab should be split evenly.
