Totally out of order!!

In the US, under 20% is borderline insults IF your service was good, to waitstaff and bartenders. The thing is tipped employees get paid $2.13 on average. Where I work now bartenders, bussers, servers, and hosts all make that wage. Without tips from our patrons we would make nothing. For instance my check every two weeks is usually $0-$10 thanks to Uncle Sam. They tax our tips and take it out of our wage.

And if you leave NO tip your waiter is PAYING to wait on you because they still have to give a portion of their tips to bussers and bartenders and sometimes hosts.

Basically the reason you tip is to show your gratitude to the server for taking time in making sure your dining expererience was as good as it could be. Now if you have terrible service I might go as low as 15%. I've been in the restaurant industry for 10 years, and now work in an "polished casual" restaurant. We still get people coming in who tip very low, but I'm also in Mississippi, so that helps explain some of the ignorance.
References :
10 years as server/bartender.

if you cannot afford to tip, you cannot afford to go out to eat. servers work hard for little pay.
References :
First of all Bird-Owner we are working for the customer not the employer. Everything we do is for you all. Now we all have bad days you should be able to tell the difference of a bad server and a bad day. The cooks mess up it is not the servers fault if you read the menu wrong not the servers fault. If you do not have the money to tip you just do not go out to dinner. If you don't want to tip, go to McDonald's, taco bell, kfc.
References :
I never understood why we as costumers have to leave a tip especially when going out is not cheep anymore . Then you are expected to leave a tip to a waiter who is not very friendly and forgets food .
Why doesn't the owner pay his employees . Why are we left to pay for them ...
References :
Read this book... "Waiter Rant, Thanks for the tip-confessions of a cynical waiter" by Steve Dublanica you'll definitely get some insight on tipping.

I picked it up and can't put it down.
References :
if you had a waitress that brought you anything, then yes.
It happens - i know, i wait tables- but dont make a habit of it, because they'll remember you. In a bad way.
References :
I don't think is the end of the world if you decide against leaving a tip. What if you are unemployed and can't afford to tip? If you want to be nice after receiving good service, leaving a tip it's ok, too. Life goes on.
References :
Possibly, if the server had a poor attitude, and she wasn't attentive. If she was working hard even if everything else was bad I'd still leave at least 10%. Most servers only make $2.13 an hour, so if you can't afford to leave a couple bucks, why even go out to eat?

I hate tip buckets at fast food type places though!!
References :
its always nice to leave a tip. waiters and waitresses don't make a whole lot of money and often live on tips from people. 15% is usually average. but it really depends on how many people are eating with you and weather or not the server is a good host.
References :
experience
