What to wear to the NAVY Dining Out?

I have been invited to the Navy’s dining out ceremony and I have no idea what to wear to it. I am looking for advice from people who have GONE to one before. Do I wear a long formal dress or a shorter coctail dress? Please only answer of you actually have been to one. Thanks!

Military Dining Out functions are very FORMAL affairs. I don’t think a "shorter cocktail dress" would be appropriate.

Many people ask "What’s the difference between a (military) ‘Dining In’ and a ‘Dining Out’?" Simple answer: At a Dining In, spouses/significant others are not invited. At a Dining out they are.

In both cases, the military members wear their "Class A"/Dress Blues uniforms - formal. Spouses/SO’s are requested to do the same.

Don’t worry - Dress up to the 9’s and have a blast. Enjoy yourself. The event might seem "stuffy" at first, but go with the flow and you should have plenty of fun.

20+ years (retired) USAF. Attended many Dining In’s/Out’s in my day - Including those for Army, Navy, and even one for the Coast Guard. (Never got to go to one for the Marine Corps, though - that would have been fun :) )
