when going out for fine dining , is it expected to get a full course meal?

im thinking of taking a few friends out to a fine dining place, but am wondering are we supposed to get both a starter and main course? could we go there just for one thing if we wanted to ? hahaha im so clueless about these things, thanks :)
Order whatever you want. But it is a good idea to go online & look at their menu beforehand.
You can each order a starter or split one.
The waiter will walk you through the ordering process. Don’t worry, have fun.

Hey, don’t feel clueless….. Every restaurant has their own way of doing things. Several years ago, I took my two cousins to dinner at this "fancy" restaurant (I wanted to thank them for helping me out in a pinch). I was impressed with the surroundings when we arrived. Linen tablecloths, linen napkins, the works. All the waitstaff wore black pants, white shirts, black ties…… When we were given our menus, I noticed EACH item had a price beside it. Meaning, you paid for your dinner salad, your entree, every little thing you ingested you got billed for……. When the bill came, for the 3 of us, it was $140.00 (that did include a bottle of wine). My point is that fine dining is getting very expensive when you have to pay for each and every item that you wouldn’t have to pay for it you had gone to the Olive Garden. See where I’m coming from? Prior to taking your friends, go to the restaurant and ask to see their menu so you won’t be surprised!

In fact it irritates me that restaurants have resorted to charging you for every little thing….. you pay for your drink, your dinner salad, your roll if you have one, your entree (which in some cases it just one thing), sigh! This is a sore spot with me……..

Anyway, go ahead of time and check menus.

Have a great time with your friends!

now days you have to pay for a starter course but i do think salad should come with it and a potato and veg. not the drink and bread that is a meal
