As a waitress in a fine dining restaraunt, I find that waiting on a table of grown adults is like walking a 4 year old through their first day of kindergarten. Yes I am here to do you and service and do make you have an enjoyable experience, but please don’t act like you’ve never been out to dinner before or like your above me. I will absolutley tell you the specials and accomodate you, but I think you should be capable of reading and making a decision as simple as what you want for din din…haha people get so serious and snoody like I am their servant and they are my master..please im waiting tables while in college because I can easily walk out with $200 a night cash..And remember, be nice to your waitress/waiter because you can’t get ANYTHING without them..And if you aren’t satisfied with your meal, it will probably be okay and can probably be replaced, its not like its your last meal on earth. When you dine out, enjoy and stop looking for little things to bitch about!
you are a server… Server = servant. You walk out with $200 a night you damn well better be kissing the customers ass. It’s your job to make them feel like they are the most important people in the world, expecialy at a fine dining establishment. Also you should know the menu so If your customer asks what you suggest you should have a suggestion. Also a reason for going to a fine dining establishment is because the food/service there is saposed to be perfect. If they find anything to nit pick about then you are failing in your job. Sorry to be this blunt. it’s just the way it is. If i heard one of my servers saying anything like this in my place, i’d let them go. Sounds like you’d be happier in a diner or a fast food joint where people don’t expect the world handed to them on a platter. Thats just the kind of place you are working at. Can’t deal with it? Then strip, and get the heck out of the fine dining industry as you do NOT belong there.

They lead horrible lives and eating out is the biggest thing they have going on. I honestly think some people just don’t know how to tip. I always leave at least 15% even for bad service. Great service I will go up to 50%. Servers work there a$$ off, and to me I feel our to underappreciated. I don’t think half of the peeps on here are noticing your talking about difficult diners, not your evreyday non trouble making joe~~~~~

Ha… good point ! I love to eat out and I never cause my server any problems… I’m the one who usually agrees to the special and doesn’t make a big deal about it arriving 30 minutes later… I might be a little pissed if it shows up cold and later than 30 minutes, but most of the time, I’m a model customer with an appreciation for a well earned tip… I usually tip 5 dollars for every 20 spent or 25%… now my wife on the other hand, she is one to bitch about even small things like a server who fails to leave napkins or a straw… she gets upset if her food isn’t hot and there within 20 minutes and even breaks the cardinal rule of telling her server to take the food back for the chef to warm it up… I worked in fast food (hahaha) so I know what happens when something goes back into the kitchen with a complaint (another hahaha)… Oh well, I like your attitude and you probably deserve more than 200 a night !!!

Being a Chef at a fine dining restaurant for years and dealing with servers who think they aren’t what they are.. IE Servers-Servants! DEAL WITH IT OR GO HOME!!!
First off let me say no one deserves being talked down to…that is just plain rude. However, with your attitude i am surprised you make as much as you do. Menus have brief descriptions and i would expect the waiter to know more about the foods served than what is in the menu. I often have several choices in mind, and base the choice i make on the description provided by my server, or their recommendation. People go out to eat to be waited on, to be attended to. It is much more than just the fine food, its an experience, where mood and ambiance play major roles. If I were stuck with a server with an attitude i would certainly seek the manager and request a different waiter.

Although I don’t consider myself a difficult diner, although I am very critical at times, partly becuase I am in the restaurant business, and i will critique maybe harder than others, but i don’t disrespect a server while doing it. You state you are working a fine dining restaurant… if so, then the expectation is much higher (then say dining at a denny’s) as to what kind of service and meal I expect for the rather inflated prices I am paying. I expect the server to be knowledgable, informative, and attentive, as well as show genuine interest in my satisfaction in my entire dining experience. I tip very well (above 20% if service stands out) even if the meal wasn’t the greatest. It’s not the servers fault the food was mediocre. I would pay 20 % + tip if I was server raw horse meat, and witled lettuce, if the service was outstanding. But…if I feel the server has any form of attitude (and this includes body language, facial expressions, posture ect) then I will show my ass in return…. If you hate your job that much, then serving the public is not for you, maybe a job involving a cubicle would suit that person better. There are some people that are difficult, for the sake of being so, that is part of working with the public….deal with it, or find another job…..

People go on power trips. It is a sign of someone not in control of their own life. I feel your pain, I used to work at fine dining and money is good. I would rather have snooty than no class though. Dont forget to smile as your snooty guest orders a 200$ bottle of wine, nothing is sweeter for your pocket:)
