David Lynch Box: Elephant Man - Mulholland Drive
As its title suggests, David Lynch Box: The Elephant Man/Mulholland Drive collects two of the scores from David Lynch’s films: 1980’s The Elephant Man and 2001’s Mulholland Drive. John Morris’ Elephant Man score is, like the film itself, atypically conventional. On pieces such as “Elephant Man Theme,” Morris crafts thoughtful, stringdriven melodies that aren’t bad in and of themselves; it’s just that Lynch fans expect more from the music backing the director’s darkly surreal imagery. The carnival music motif running through “Dr. Treves Visits the Freak Show and Elephant Man,” “The Nightmare” and “Pantomime” is apt, but once again, a little more predictable than it needed to be. The Mulholland Drive soundtrack, meanwhile, blends pieces from Lynch’s longtime musical collaborator Angelo Badalamenti and tracks by Lynch’s musical side project, Blue Bob. Badalamenti’s compositions span the uptempo swing of “Jitterbug,” the haunting drones of the film’s main theme, the jazzy “Dinner Party Pool Music” and the ominous ambience of “Diner,” “Silencio,” and “Dwarfland/Love Theme.” Lynch’s own surfy, guitarbased compositions, “Mountains Falling” and “Go Get Some,” offer a sonic twist on the sunny California that Lynch subverts in the film. Similarly, Linda Scott’s sugarysweet “I’ve Told Every Little Star” takes on a slightly disturbing edge in the soundtrack’s context, while “Llorando,” Rebecca Del Rio’s Spanish a cappella version of Roy Orbison’s classic “Crying,” only sounds more vulnerable and heartwrenching. For diehard Lynch fans and soundtrack buffs, this twodisc set is an easy way to flesh out their collections.
