someone sent me a CV with a picture of themselves on it! that stood out! also a goody bag with another, with a pen a diary and some mints in! was a nice touch.
if it was me i would just make sure it was presentable, in a nice clear folder bound, not dog eared paperclipped or stapled together!

The best thing these days is to know how to spell and know the difference between NOW and KNOW. Also the use of an apostrophe is another good one as in DOESN'T
If you are exceptionally good at what you do then say so. You must show confidence and if you do not highlight your best attributes then how will the employer know. He cannot read your mind or read between lines. He cannot interpret your reticence as modesty.

You'll want to make sure that when you go get it printed that the watermark on the cover letter is right-side up. Many people are not aware of this - but if you hold the paper up to the light, you can see if it was printed correctly. If you are going to pay the big bucks for the fancy paper, make sure they do it right. There's nothing more embarrasing than going for some really big job interview or putting in for a promotion and having your letter and resume printed upside down on the paper.

Worked at Kinko's for 5 years. It might piss the clerk off, but have them re-do it.
You need to grab their attention, shake them and tell them that you are the one for the job.

We had someone also send in a passport size photo with their CV, it did catch my eye. The most important thing is punctuation, spelling, nothing worse than looking at a CV and seeing words that are spelt incorrectly, also if your filling in an application form, please read the questions properly, where it says "date of birth" don't put today's date. You would not believe the amount of people that do that, also put a contact number, home or mobile so we can call you for an interview.
