My 7 year old son jumped off a moving swing and broke both bones in each arm just above the wrist, also the pinky on his right hand! Any tips or suggestions on how to keep him entertained during this long summer would be great. Tips or suggestions on self-feeding, bathing etc. would also be great.
There are several video games that don’t require hand or wrist action, such as Dance Dance Revolution. Wii has the largest selection of whole-body games, where they use a footpad instead of a hand controller.
It also helps with exercise!
For less active entertainment, rent old movies you remember fondly from when you were that age. Books may be difficult, but there are devices that hold the book open for those with difficulty using their hands and arms.
For self-feeding, go with hotdogs and other large "finger food" items that require little dexterity. Summer is great for those kinds of food, stuff that doesn’t require silverware to eat.
He’s lucky it happened now, not late this summer. My son once broke his right arm just above the wrist just a few weeks before school started, starting school without being able to write was difficult at best.
Hmm, this is tough
My brother just broke his right wrist and being right handed his created a problem. He learned to eat with his left hand (and he couldn’t take showers only baths). But in this case he can’t. Try letting him watch TV since he can’t play outside or swim or play on the Internet. Read him a book. Play a game with him. Spend as much time with him as possible. Let him have a friend come over and play a simple game with him. Keep him from getting too rowdy so that he is subject for injuring his wrists even more. Hope this helped!
