I find that there has to be SOME realism in the story, otherwise it seems almost pointless. When stories become so ridiculously crazy, they become stupid and it's hard to make them interesting. One of the reasons for this may be that people need to relate, somehow, to the story, and if they cannot, it becomes pointless. With that said, I would think that the best way to make this story interesting is to definitely write in an obvious moral/lesson to the story so that readers see there is a point to all the crazy nonsense. Also, if your characters are interesting and funny enough, they should be able to stand on their own. Try not to be too radical (ie they're fighting zombies one second and then all of a sudden they're flying to Wonderland or something) and remember to make they plot line flow, and it should turn out okay.

Good luck, and I hope I helped a little :)
