When writing a restaurant review, do you need to seek permission from the establishment?

if your piece is going to be published?
Thanks all, perhaps I should have worded my question a little better - KittyRogers has the goods I’m looking for so far, but if anyone else has info on the ‘etiquette’ of this it would be great
Actually, further to this, I’m not so much worried about being welcome in the establishment again, if the truth has been told - I am however concerned for my own ethical reputation within the industry, as this form of freelancing is unchartered by me as yet. Should I inform the restaurant that an article is to be published as a courtesy to the proprietors?

i think if you’re writing a review, you don’t need "permission." but if you’re writing about the establishment, say a feature on their menu or the star chef, that’s when you ask for permission so you’ll get access to their lit, photos, kitchen, and do the necessary interviews to do your article.

No, you have the freedom to express what you want, and say what you want.

I thought that was the point, so you can review without them knowing so you get an accurate view of the establishment.

You should always inform the restaurant that you are writing a review (you can do this after you write it but ALWAYS before it is published). In not doing so, it will look unprofessional and you may NEVER be welcome in that establishment again! There is a certain liability attached to this sort of thing.
